Finding Reading a Challenge During a Pandemic

Image
I love reading.  I have always loved reading.  But reading during a pandemic has been more than a little bit challenging.   Between worries and distractions my mind is constantly somewhere else.  I've found that I can't sustain my focus for more than a chapter or two.  I pick up a book, I put it down.  Then I struggle to remember what I just read, so I have to start all over again.  I've tried new books, old favourites, audio books, and ebooks.  The result is always the same, another book added to the "to be finished" pile.  And it isn't like I don't have the time to read, I have scads of it.  But then I'm never alone and the moment I pick up a book to try again, someone and/or something needs my attention and whatever little time I had to myself has now blown away like dandelion seeds in a stiff breeze.   You'd think given the situation, with multiple lockdowns and unending time at home, I would use reading as an escape -...

Guided Reading Level:  M Curriculum Links:  Character Ed: Perseverance Reading: Transforming Reading: Narrative Science: Needs and Characteristics of Living Things Social Studies: Our Changing Roles and Responsibilities Writing: Letters Writing: Persuasive Lori's Notes:  Design:  This is a simple book.  The title is cute and is sure to be intriguing for young students - cows that type!  How many students know what a type writer is anymore!  It would be fun to bring one into the class to allow students to try.  The front and end papers are a red/brown that (to my eyes) mimic the colour of the barn, as if once sta...

The Boundless by Kenneth Oppel

Image
Title:  The Boundless Canadian Author :   Kenneth Oppel Perma-Bound Catalogue #: 97004 Description:    Aboard "The Boundless," the greatest train ever built, on its maiden voyage across Canada, teenaged Will enlists the aid of a traveling circus to save the train from villains. Rubric Rating:  Level 3 - Laud It Why I Read It:  Read aloud with my son.  First read aloud that he, as a dyslexic, read to me.  Notes:   William Everett is an artist.  However, his father doesn’t want him to study art – he wants him to work on the railway in a good paying job.  Will has lived both poor and privileged – growing up poor as his father worked for the Canadian Pacific Railway, and as a child of privilege going to private school after his father is promoted within the organization after saving the life of Cornelius Van Horne, the owner of the railway.   Van Horne’s greatest creation is the Boundless, a 13 mile long t...

The Girl and the Bicycle by Mark Pett

Image
Title:  The Girl and The Bicycle  Author/Illustrator:  Mark Pett   Perma-Bound Catalogue #: 80407  Description:  A wordless picture book in which a  girl sees a bicycle she wants to buy, works hard  for a kindly neighbour to earn the money for it,  then gets a pleasant surprise. Curriculum Links:  Art: Pencil Illustrations, Lines Character Education: Kindness, Perseverance, Responsibility Math: Financial Literacy Reading: Inferring Science: Daily and Seasonal Changes Social Studies: Our Changing Roles and Responsibilities Notes: Design:  This book is slightly wider and shorter than an average picture book.  The cover and title alone made me want to pick up this book.  A little girl and her younger brother are on the cover with the girl looking at a green bicycle in a toy store window.  The pages in the book are done in taupes and greys so the pages seem soft and aged (rather than ...

365 Days of Wonder by R. J. Palacio

Image
Title:  365 Days of Wonder {Mr. Browne's Precepts} Series: Wonder Author:  R. J. Palacio Perma-Bound Catalogue #: 127343 Description:    A book of precepts, with one saying for each day, from Auggie's teacher Mr. Browne. Rubric Rating:  Level 4 - Love It  Why I Read It:   I’m a bit of a fan of precepts and it looked like a very quick read. Notes:   I really enjoyed reading this book.  Interestingly, I had this book and Wonder delivered at the same time.  Usually I would have read wonder first but I ended up sticking my nose in this one instead and couldn’t put it down.  While it did give away some of the plot points of Wonder I find I’m more interested in reading the book now than I had originally planned.  If the book is written with the same tone and care as this book I think I will find it delightful. While I had heard/seen/read many of the precepts before I did find ones that were new to me....

Focused by Alyson Gerber

Image
Title:  Focused Author:  Alyson Gerber Perma-Bound Catalogue #: 181907 Description:    T welve-year-old Clea wants to do her homework, follow instructions, pay attention in school, and play chess on the school team, but it's difficult. When she is diagnosed with ADHD, she becomes determined to learn how to focus. Rubric Rating:  Level 2 - Like It Why I Read It:  Having a daughter with ADHD I thought this would be a title that she would identify with. Notes:   I really wanted to give this title a better grade but unfortunately it fell quite short of the mark in my opinion.  I read this title aloud with my daughter, even without ADHD I found the chapters way too long, and if the appeal of this book is to target readers with ADHD I'm not sure they would have the sustained attention needed.  Clea is struggling in school, she can't seem to focus in class she's distracted by the things around her, her mind flying off in all...

Rubric Rating:  Level 3 - Laud It Why I Read It:   Definitely the write up was what interested me with this book, the cover not at all. Notes:    Everyday A wakes up in a different body.  Sometimes, he’s male, sometimes she’s female.  A might be gay, straight, or transgendered, diabetic, blind, or a drug addict.  Everyday is new. A doesn’t mind waking up in a different body everyday until he wakes up in Justin’s body and falls in love with Justin’s girlfriend Rhiannon.  Rhiannon is the only person who seems to see A ...

Liesl & Po by Lauren Oliver

Image
Title:  Liesl & Po Author:  Lauren Oliver Perma-Bound Catalogue #: 71661 Description:    A mix-up involving the greatest magic in the world has tremendous consequences for Liesl, an orphan who has been locked in an attic, Will, an alchemist's runaway apprentice, and Po, a ghost, as they are pursued by friend and foe while making an important journey. Rubric Rating:  Level 3 - Laud It Why I Read It:   Read the Delirium Series by this author and thought I would try this stand alone title. Notes:   An intricately connected novel, with a wide cast of interesting characters.  Liesl, after the death of her father, has been relegated by her horrible step-mother to a room in the attic (very reminiscent of many fairytales).  There she meets the ghosts of Po and Bundle. They are drawn to Liesl literally by her drawings. Po becomes the go between for Liesl and the otherside.  Meanwhile, Will, the magicians apprentice ...

Beholding Bee by Kimberly Newton Fusco

Rubric Rating:  Level 3 - Laud It Why I Read It:   Interesting title and write up Notes:   This book was a very slow start for me.  Bee, short for Beatrice, has been an orphan since the age of four.  Since the death of her parents in a car accident she has been living and working with Pauline in Ellis’ traveling circus.  Bee is now eleven years old and while she only works in the hotdog stand Ellis wants to put her in the show because of her “diamond”.  The port wine stain birthmark that is on her face. Her diamond draws the attention of everyone who see her so Bee uses her hair as a sh...

Image
Title:  Bluffton: My Summers with Buster Author:  Matt Phelan Perma-Bound Catalogue #: 138305 Description:    Henry bonds with a young Buster Keaton over games of baseball while the latter summers locally with a troupe of vaudeville performers. Rubric Rating:   Level 3 - Laud It Why I Read It:  A growing interest in Graphic novels and a fascination with silent films. Notes:   I really liked this graphic novel.  The images are soft – softly coloured and softly focused.  This is the story of Henry Harrison and the summers that Buster Keaton and the Vaudeville troop come and stay at Bluffton.  While Henry is a fictional character Buster Keaton is not and the novel is based on his autobiography. The arrival of Buster brings excitement to Henry’s life.  They fill their summer days with baseball, pratfalls, and pranks. When Buster leaves for the show, Henry’s life returns to normal, helping his father at the har...
